About Me

Chris

Hi, I’m Chris, aka “Niche Safari.” It’s called Niche Safari because I was originally “looking” for a niche, like I was on a safari. idk. Let’s just move on from that, okay? Thanks.

Here’s my online business timeline – warts and all.

November 2018

In November 2018, I turned 30.

And quit my job as a university lecturer.

To follow my girlfriend (now wife, mother of my child), to Canada.

I couldn’t swallow the idea of job interviews.

Begging to some smug nobody for a low-paid job.

So I hung up my mortarboard hat,

listened to podcasts (Niche Pursuits, the Doug Show, Authority Hacker),

and built some websites.

January 2019

Between January and July 2019, I launched two websites.

  • The first was a content site.
  • The second, an affiliate niche site reviewing products on Amazon.

The first year of any new venture is a whirlwind of learning.

But by the end of the year, I was drawing a small but motivating sum of cash from Amazon and Ezoic, marking the first money I ever made online:

April 2020

On the 29th of April 2020, I launched Niche Safari with a video explaining how I got to 100,000 pageviews a month within 9 months of registering a domain.

September 2020

Launched the race to $5,000 case study, where I attempted to see which of two websites will be first to $5,000 per month: a site monetized by ads, or a site monetized by affilaite products.

Man, the intro of this video is cringe…

October 2020

In October 2020, I sold my first affiliate site for $118,000.

The site had 86 articles on it and was getting 24,000 visitors per month.

The main income earners were an Amazon product valued at $450 and another valued at $80.

Sadly, that site, too, has since been hammered by Google.

September 2022

My “winning” race to $5,000 site (the site monetized by display ads only) hit $10,000 revenue:

November 2022

2 out of 3 of my sites get hammered by a Google Core update:

I double down on my largest site, committing to writing 100 articles per month for 12 months.

September 2023

My largest niche site tops out at 3.6 million pageviews in a single month.

October 2023

Google hammers my last remaining site making decent income…

October 2023 – Now

I trial a range of ways to make money creating content online, including:

  • A YouTube channel on In-Flight Disasters
  • A YouTube channel on Parenting
  • A YouTube channel on Aesop’s Fables
  • A Gum Road products page (that one was really fun)
  • A niche site for teachers
  • A facebook page + niche site for parents
  • A podcast (I managed 2 episodes)
  • Selling my sites (no one wanted them)
  • Etc. etc. (Insert 5-10 more ideas that I can’t even remember right now)

March 2024

I started this newsletter, documenting my journey rebuilding my content portfolio. You can read the backcatalog of newsletters here.
